B.C. highway to reopen Wednesday after 19-day closure due to unstable hillside

KELOWNA, B.C. — The main highway between Kelowna and Penticton will reopen Wednesday morning after blasting and other work stabilizes the hillside above the route.

Highway 97 was closed just north of Summerland on Oct. 24 after crews working on a widening project noticed a crack in the slope overlooking the road.

Blasting since then, including major explosions set off this weekend, brought down about 34,000 cubic metres of rock, some of which was placed at the foot of the hillside to stabilize the earth above.

Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon says enough material has now been removed to make the slope safe for traffic, and the road will reopen at 5 a.m. on Wednesday.

The closure has forced travellers to make lengthy detours over secondary and logging roads, or use a free water taxi service provided by the provincial government.

It was the second major highway closure in B.C. in the last three months, after a rock slide blocked the road between Vancouver and Whistler for four days in late July.

Rock fissure threatens roadway

Frank Luba, The Province

Published: Sunday, November 09, 2008

The fate of a closed section of Highway 97 in the Okanagan will become clearer this week, according to a transportation ministry spokesman Dave Crebo.

"After the weekend we will have a better idea [of when the road will open] -- will it be a few days or another week," Crebo said.

The highway north of Summerland was closed Oct. 24 when a large fissure was discovered in the rock slope above the highway, which is being upgraded to four lanes.

Crews await arrival of specialized equipment to better gauge danger of unstable slope

Special to The Globe and Mail

Blasting was suspended yesterday at the unstable bluff above Highway 97 in the Okanagan near Summerland, as crews awaited the arrival of sensitive monitoring equipment to provide a better picture of the dangers presented by the slope.

The slope continues to separate from the main bluff at a rate of 10 to 15 millimetres a day after a metre-wide crack was spotted 11 days ago by construction crews working on a $54-million highway expansion project. If the slope fails, as much as 300,000 cubic metres of hillside could fall.
